Scores and Tasting Notes

The bottling announces itself on first pour. Lavender, earth, cured meat and toasted herbs fill the senses and lavish your mouth with layer upon layer of ‘Je ne sais quoi’! But, I do know Powerline Syrah.Winemaker Charles Smith

96 Points – James Suckling (v2016)

“This is a unique red with grilled meat and red beans. Veggie and tobacco notes, too. Full bodied, yet agile and vivid. Love it. Drink or hold.”

95 Points – Jeb Dunnuck (formerly of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate) (v2016)

“All Phelps clone and not destemmed, the 2016 Syrah Powerline was fermented in small, stainless steel bins and aged in mostly neutral puncheons. It has a big, spicy bouquet of white pepper, blackcurrants, sappy green herbs, and hints of game. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, elegant wine that has good acidity, fine tannins, and a great finish. It’s another Northern Rhone look-alike.”

93+ Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (v2016)

“...more robust nose than many of the other Syrahs in the range, with an open-knit expression of blackberry jus, dark cherry compote and soft, savory aromas over a core of dusty river rock. The medium to full-bodied palate shows an approachable wine that may not last as long as the other Syrahs in the range but is ready now. The wine has a tension that delivers pleasure with depth on the long finish that ends slightly hot.”

Vineyard – Powerline (100%)

Walla Walla Valley AVA, Washington State Red Wine (100% Syrah, 14.5% alcohol)
A 30-acre estate vineyard, located over 1200 feet elevation. Powerline Vineyard was planted in 2012 in the foothills of the Blue Mountains, just south of Walla Walla in the Walla Walla Valley AVA. The soils are well drained with cobblestone river rocks and underlying layers of sand and gravel deposits, allowing vines to develop very deep and strong roots. The cobblestone rock was brought down river from the Blue Mountains and deposited on top of the ancient river bed. The deep sand and silt below the stones bring a great purity to the grapes, while high elevations keep acids high, producing very well-balanced wines with remarkable complex characters.
The vineyards we work with are farmed using the most up to date sustainable practices.

Vintage

2017 was a fantastic year for making wine with a cool spring and a fair amount of rain. Washington had an ideal spring for healthy vines. The moderate temperatures during summer were perfect for small clusters and yet delayed veraison into the fall where we had a consistent ripening season that allowed us to hang the fruit for perfect tannin and flavor without losing acidity or acquiring too much alcohol. Overall it was a vintage to remember.
