Scores and Tasting Notes

The highest refined Charlotte to date. Six vintages in and just beginning to show its pedigree. Forest floor, black plum, alpine strawberry and pouch tobacco waft from the glass, leading to a sophisticated palate that lists orange peel, damp earth, cured meat and exotic spice as key ingredients to this elegant and delicious wine. – Winemaker Charles Smith

96 Points – James Suckling

“Wow. This is a fantastic field-blended red with aromas and flavors of blackberries, earth, meat, light chocolate and spice. Some green undertones add complexity. It’s full-bodied, yet agile and bright. So complex. Like great Châteauneuf from the 1980s. A blend of 41% mourvedre, 36% grenache and 10% syrah, the rest counoise, grenache blanc and picpoul.”

96 Points – Jeb Dunnuck (formerly of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate – v2016)

“All co-fermented (not destemmed) blend of 41% Mourvèdre, 36% Grenache, and the rest a mix of Rhone varieties (some white), aged in neutral demi-muids, the 2016 Charlotte reveals a medium ruby color as well as gorgeous notes of kirsch, black cherries, mulled strawberries, spring flowers, game, and peppery herbs. Rich, medium to full-bodied, graceful and yet powerful on the palate, with silky yet present tannins, it’s another stunning wine. 371 cases.”

90 Points – Wine Spectator (v2016)

“Tightly focused, with dense layers of dark berry, smoky garrigue and crushed stone that persist toward fine-grained tannins. Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Counoise, Cinsault, Grenache Blanc and Picpoul. Best from 2021 through 2025.”

Vineyard – Powerline

Walla Walla Valley, Washington State Red Wine (9% Grenache, 36% Mourvédre, 11% Syrah, 6% Cinsault, 5% Counoise, 2% Grenache Blanc, 1% Picpoul [co-fermented]; 15.0% Alcohol)
A 30-acre Estate Vineyard planted in 2012 in the foothills of the Blue Mountains, just south of Walla Walla in the Walla Walla Valley AVA. The soils are well-drained with cobblestone river rocks and underlying layers of sand and gravel deposits, allowing vines to develop very deep and strong roots. The cobblestone rock was brought down river from the Blue Mountains and deposited on top of the ancient river bed. The deep sand and silt below the stones bring a great purity to the grapes, while high elevations keep acids high and alcohol low, producing very well-balanced wines with remarkable complex characters.

Vintage

2017 was a fantastic year for making wine with a cool spring and a fair amount of rain. Washington had an ideal spring for healthy vines. The moderate temperatures during summer were perfect for small clusters and yet delayed veraison into the fall where we had a consistent ripening season that allowed us to hang the fruit for perfect tannin and flavor without losing acidity or acquiring too much alcohol. Overall it was a vintage to remember.
