Scores and Tasting Notes

A floral aroma of black roses, cool sand and crushed gravel. A weight-defying wine that includes dark fruit, cured olives, tanned leather, molasses, 60’s suede and a slap in the face with a bouquet of violets.Winemaker Charles Smith

94 Points – Jeb Dunnuck (formerly of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate)

“The 2017 Syrah The Deal comes from the Sundance Vineyard and gravelly, sandy, volcanic soils. It was not destemmed and was brought up in 30% new puncheons. It’s another ethereal, complex, yet powerful wine that has loads of black raspberry and blackberry fruits, smoked game, leafy herbs, and tobacco aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied and just seamless on the palate, it’s going to evolve for 10-15 years.”

94 Points – James Suckling

“This is very typical of an excellent syrah with sweet tobacco, berries, dried meat and spice. Medium to full body. Chocolate, spice and ripe-fruit flavors through to the finish. Vivid and rich.”

92 Points – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate (v2016)

“The 2016 Syrah The Deal Sundance Vineyard opens with black peppercorn ground over a bowl of black fruit, with aromas of cigar ash and savory herbs with dark purple flowers. Medium to full-bodied, the wine expands in the mouth to show a rich but chewy palate with lush fruit and grippy tannins across the back. It ends with a grippy finish that will take some time to come around or will be best enjoyed with food, now.”

Vineyard – Sundance (100%)

Walla Walla Valley, Washington State Red Wine
(100% Syrah, 15.0% Alcohol)
One of the oldest vineyards on the Wahluke Slope, planted in 1997. The site is topsoil over gravel, sand and broken down basalt with more caliche than other sites in the Wahluke. The vineyard, because of its aspect, is also a later ripening site allowing for great concentration.
The vineyards we work with are farmed using the most up to date sustainable practices.

Vintage

2017 was a fantastic year for making wine with a cool spring and a fair amount of rain. Washington had an ideal spring for healthy vines. The moderate temperatures during summer were perfect for small clusters and yet delayed veraison into the fall where we had a consistent ripening season that allowed us to hang the fruit for perfect tannin and flavor without losing acidity or acquiring too much alcohol. Overall it was a vintage to remember.
