Scores & Tasting Notes

Truly one of a kind and best vintage to date. Crushed volcanic rock, cassis, tar, lilac and a potpourri in the nose that gives way to so much more. Discover for yourself. – Winemaker Charles Smith

94 Points – James Suckling

“This is a field blend and shows intense tobacco-leaf and floral character. It’s full bodied, chewy and powerful. Wild and thought-provoking. Moss, bark and black-tea undertones. A blend of 38% cabernet sauvignon, 34% cabernet franc and 28% merlot.”

97 Points – Jeb Dunnuck (formerly of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, v2016)

“The 2016 Klein BX Vineyard Collection checks in as 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 28% Cabernet Franc, all of which was co-fermented and aged 27 months in French oak. Coming from a 3-acre parcel in the vineyard, it’s a monster of a wine loaded with notions of blackcurrants, cassis, chocolate, spice box, tobacco, and scorched earth. It’s not for the faint of heart and is full-bodied, super rich, concentrated, and structured, yet it stays balanced, has a seamless texture, and is remarkably elegant for a wine of this size. It’s going to benefit from 2-4 years of bottle age and cruise for 15-20 years in cold cellars.”

Vineyard – Klein

Walla Walla Valley, Washington State Red Wine> (38% Cabernet Sauvignon; 34% Cabernet Franc; 28% Merlot, 14.0% Alcohol)
This vineyard is located at the Southwestern end of the Walla Walla Valley. It’s volcanic rock, with thin, wind-blown loess over basalt. The high elevation, 850 feet, means it doesn’t freeze and is a fairly windy site. This vineyard produces low yields and powerful, unique wines.
The vineyards we work with are farmed using the most up to date sustainable practices.

Vintage

2017 was a fantastic year for making wine with a cool spring and a fair amount of rain. Washington had an ideal spring for healthy vines. The moderate temperatures during summer were perfect for small clusters and yet delayed veraison into the fall where we had a consistent ripening season that allowed us to hang the fruit for perfect tannin and flavor without losing acidity or acquiring too much alcohol. Overall it was a vintage to remember.
