2018 Substance Chardonnay

$17.00

Rich, focused and compelling. The aromatics lift the wine. Creamy lemon curd, brioche and minerality consume the palate. Broad, long and delicious as the finish sails on and on and on. —Charles

“All barrel fermented Chardonnay from Frenchman Hills Vineyard brought up in 15% new oak, the 2018 Chardonnay Ch offers plenty of orchard fruits, honeyed flowers, and brioche notes as well as a medium-bodied, round, beautifully textured style on the palate. It’s another smoking value from the talents of Charles Smith.”

Vineyard

The vineyards we work with are farmed using the most up to date sustainable practices.

Frenchman Hills (100%): Frenchman Hills was planted in 1998 and is about a 30-minute drive north of the Wahluke Slope, which is one of the warmest areas in the Columbia Valley. However, Frenchman Hills Vineyard is a cooler site, partly because of its higher elevation at1650 feet. It also does not easily frost, and the limestone and broken basalt soils at the top of the vineyard were not affected by the Missoula Flood that ravaged much of Eastern Washington some 12,000 years ago. Because of the slightly cooler aspect, grapes hang longer without accumulating excessive sugar (and thus, higher alcohols) while still managing to retain beautiful acidity.

Vintage

The 2018 vintage was incredible! This outstanding vintage began mild followed by a long and dry ripening season in the fall. This enabled us to hang the fruit to reach optimal ripeness without losing acidity or increasing sugars. The wines from 2018 are exceptional in many ways, from the great expression of the whites to the beautiful refinement and complexity of the reds. Enjoy!
